Getting started

What is Actscribe?

Actscribe is a web app that connects to your Strava account and uses AI to generate creative, personalised titles and descriptions for your activities. It learns your writing style and generates text that sounds like you — not like a generic AI.

How do I sign up?

Go to actscribe.app and click "Connect with Strava". You'll be redirected to Strava to authorise the connection, then brought back to Actscribe to complete a short setup wizard.

What permissions does Actscribe need from Strava?

Actscribe requests the following permissions:

  • Read your activities — to show you your recent activities and generate titles for them
  • Write to your activities — to update the title and description of your activities when you approve them

We never read your personal profile beyond your name and photo, and we never access payment or health data.

Generating titles and descriptions

How does title generation work?

Actscribe reads your activity data (distance, duration, sport type, location) and your personal writing style profile, then asks Claude — Anthropic's AI — to generate a title and description that fits your style. The result is shown to you for review before anything is changed on Strava.

What is autonomous mode?

In autonomous mode, Actscribe automatically generates and applies a title (and optionally a description) whenever you upload a new activity to Strava. You don't need to do anything — it happens in the background within a few minutes of your activity being uploaded.

You can turn autonomous mode on or off at any time in Settings.

What is manual mode?

In manual mode, Actscribe suggests titles and descriptions but does not apply them automatically. You open the app, review the suggestions, and choose whether to apply them. This gives you full control over every change.

Can I generate a description without a title, or vice versa?

Yes. In the activity edit view, each field has its own "Generate" button. You can generate only the title, only the description, or both independently.

In what language are titles generated?

Actscribe detects the language of your existing activity titles the first time it analyses your writing style and sets that as your generation language. You can change it at any time in Settings → Writing style → Generation language. Over 30 languages are supported.

What are the context chips?

When editing an activity, you'll see optional chips to add context — how you felt, what you'd highlight, anything worth mentioning. These are entirely optional but help Actscribe generate something more specific and personal to that particular activity.

Writing style

What is the style profile?

The style profile is a short summary of how you write about your activities, derived from your existing titles. It captures your tone, vocabulary, recurring themes, and personality. Actscribe uses it to generate titles that sound like you, not like a generic AI.

When is my style analysed?

Your style is analysed automatically the first time you open Actscribe, using your most recent activities. It is not re-analysed automatically — you can update it manually by tapping "Update" on the style profile card in the activities view.

Can I update my style profile?

Yes. In the activities view, tap the style profile card to expand it, then tap "Update". Actscribe will re-analyse your recent activities and update the profile. This is useful if your writing style has evolved or if you have added many new activities since the last analysis.

What are writing styles?

Actscribe offers over 10 writing styles — Epic, Ironic, Poetic, Minimalist, Cinematic, Music refs, Literary, Gaming, Motivational, Technical, and Funny. You can select one or more in Settings → Writing style. Hover over each style to see an example of how it affects the generated text.

What are custom instructions?

In Settings → Context, you can add up to 500 characters of personal instructions that are always included in the generation prompt. For example: "I train for triathlons", "I always include the elevation gain", or "I prefer short punchy titles without emojis". These help fine-tune the output to your specific preferences.

Favourite places

What are favourite places?

Favourite places are locations you save in Actscribe — your usual park, the café at the end of a long ride, the trail head you love. When you finish an activity near one of these places, Actscribe mentions it naturally in the generated title or description.

How do I add a favourite place?

Go to the Favourite places section from the navigation bar. Tap "New place" or tap directly on the map to set a location. Give it a name, an optional description, and set the proximity radius — the distance within which Actscribe will consider you were at that place.

What is the proximity radius?

The proximity radius defines how close your activity's start point needs to be to the saved location for Actscribe to consider you were there. A radius of 200m is good for specific spots like a café or a trailhead. A larger radius (500m–1km) works better for general areas like a park or neighbourhood.

How many favourite places can I save?

There is no hard limit on the number of places you can save.

Settings

What are the emoji and cultural reference settings?

You can choose whether Actscribe includes emojis in generated titles and descriptions, and whether it uses cultural references (film quotes, music, literature, etc.). These are on by default but can be turned off if you prefer a cleaner style.

What is "sports without description"?

In autonomous mode, you can specify sport types for which Actscribe should only generate a title, not a description. This is useful for activities like Yoga or Workout where a description may feel unnecessary. This setting only applies in autonomous mode — if you manually request a description for any activity, it will always be generated.

What is the description signature?

You can optionally enable a subtle signature — "✦ actscribe.app" — added at the end of generated descriptions. This is off by default and entirely optional.

Account and privacy

What data does Actscribe store?

Actscribe stores your Strava athlete ID, name, profile photo, your preferences and settings, your writing style profile, your favourite places, and a history of generated titles. We also store your email address, which you provide during setup. Full details are in our Privacy Policy.

How do I delete my data?

Go to Settings → Account → Delete my data. This immediately and permanently deletes all your data from Actscribe's servers, including your preferences, style profile, favourite places, and title history. You will be logged out and your Strava connection will be revoked.

How do I disconnect Strava?

You can disconnect Strava in two ways:

  • From Actscribe: Settings → Account → Delete my data (this also deletes all your data)
  • From Strava: go to strava.com/settings/apps, find Actscribe and click Revoke Access. This disconnects the app but does not delete your data from Actscribe's servers

How do I update my email?

Go to Settings → Account → Email address. Update it and save your settings.

Why do you need my email?

We use your email only to notify you of important updates — new features, improvements, or changes to our terms. We will never use it for marketing or share it with third parties.

Troubleshooting

Titles are not being applied automatically

Check the following:

  • Make sure autonomous mode is turned on in Settings
  • Make sure your Strava connection is active — if you see a "Reconnect" message, follow the instructions to reconnect
  • New titles are applied within a few minutes of your activity being uploaded to Strava. If it has been more than 15 minutes, try opening Actscribe and generating the title manually
  • If the activity type is in your "Sports without description" list, only the title will be generated, not the description

I'm being asked to reconnect with Strava

Strava access tokens expire periodically for security reasons. When this happens, Actscribe will show a reconnect screen. Simply tap "Reconnect with Strava" and authorise the connection again — all your settings and data are preserved.

The generated style doesn't sound like me

Try the following:

  • Update your style profile from the activities view — tap the style card and then "Update"
  • Add custom instructions in Settings → Context to guide the generation more specifically
  • Make sure the writing styles selected in Settings match the tone you're looking for
  • The more activities you have with personalised titles (not generic ones like "Morning Run"), the better the style profile will be

The title was generated but not applied to Strava

In manual mode, titles are never applied automatically — you need to approve them in the app. In autonomous mode, check that your Strava connection is active and that the activity was uploaded after you connected Actscribe.
